Jet Airways, India’s premier international airline, today announced that it will commence daily flights from Thiruvananthapuram to Sharjah from 30th October, 2011. The airline currently operates a daily flight from Kochi to Sharjah and the addition of another daily service will further enhance its growing International network. This will be the tenth daily service from India to the United Arab Emirates and the twenty-second Jet Airways flight from India to the Gulf.

Flight 9W 570 will depart Thiruvananthapuram at 1015 hours local time (LT) and arrive in Sharjah at 1240 hours (LT). The return flight 9W 569 will depart Sharjah at 1340 hours (LT), arriving in Thiruvananthapuram at 1900 hours (LT).

The airline will deploy its state-of-the-art Boeing 737-800 aircraft on this new route, offering 16 Premiere and 138 Economy seats. Guests will be offered best-in-its-class product, which boasts of warm service, award winning in-flight entertainment, as well as delectable cuisine. Jet Airways currently operates to 24 International destinations.

Capitalising on improved global business environment and the holiday season, private air-carrier Jet Airways Group today claimed it has flied the highest number of passengers -- over 20 lakh -- in May, 2011.

Jet Airways flew 15.5 lakh passengers on its domestic and international network, while JetLite flew 4.7 lakh guests in the said month, the company said in a statement issued here.

"The new milestone of flying 20 lakh passengers further reiterates the fact that Jet Airways, Jet Airways Konnect and JetLite have all catered to distinct passenger segments. Our focus to deliver customer delight will further help Jet Airways build on its industry benchmarks of convenience and comfort for its guests," Jet Airways (India) Chief Executive Officer, Nikos Kardassis, said.

The annual holiday season lifted domestic and international passenger traffic for Jet Airways by 17 per cent, as compared to the same period last year.

Also SpiceJet will soon begin an Ahmedabad-Nagpur direct flight. Sources said Air India is also mulling new daily flights to Delhi and Mumbai in the morning and evening.

"The numbers of business travellers have skyrocketed in the last few months. After November last year, daily morning and evening flights to Delhi and Mumbai from Ahmedabad have seen an increased rush. We believe that by the winter session, all the private airlines will increase their domestic flights from Ahmedabad," said a senior private airline official. Last year, nine new domestic flights were added at Ahmedabad airport in the winter schedule.

Currently, in the summer schedule, city airport has around 70 domestic flights landing and taking off daily. "A meeting will be held with airlines in June and only then the exact number of new flights will be known. However, with increased traffic at city airport, we estimate around 15 per cent hike in the number of domestic flights," said senior Ahmedabad airport official.

Jet Airways, India’s premier international airline, has announced impressive growth figures for April 2010, which also mark the seventh straight month of increase in passenger traffic for the airline.

The airlines’ domestic passenger traffic reported a stellar 39 percent growth as compared to the same period last year and its international passenger traffic clocked a rise of 29 percent. A direct corollary to which has been the carriers ability to build on its leadership position in the Indian aviation industry.

Market pundits may be splitting hairs over Jet's second low-cost service, launched on May 8, but the airline seems to have made the right connect with travellers. Jet Konnect booking volumes surged 27 per cent with the addition of new services on May 20, which has come as a boon for the Naresh Goyal-owned airline in the face of falling passenger volumes.

With 60 Konnect flights daily, Jet konnect one-fourth capacity now comes from low cost. We are buoyed by this good response and evaluating other domestic routes for conversion to Konnect, says Sudheer Raghavan, Chief Commercial Officer, Jet Airways. But the question that has baffled most is why another low-cost brand when JetLite is already around. Apparently, Jet Konnect could not have transferred its surplus capacity to its lowcost cousin without first sorting out regulatory hurdles. Another reason could be issues with the owners of the erstwhile Sahara, which is now JetLite. But Raghavan would not admit as much. Instead, he says, As all JetLite aircraft are successfully deployed at the moment, it would not make any sense to redeploy them to new routes. Hence, we designed a flexible rapidly-deployable, singleconfiguration, no-frills economy service using Jet Airways aircraft and crew.

In the 12 months since April 2008, Jet Airways not only lost about 2.77 lakh passengers, but also its leadership position to Vijay Mallya-owned Kingfisher Airlines, which was ahead of the Jet combine by 1.9 per cent in domestic market share, as of April 2009.

When losses appeared irreversible, Mallya tweaked his fleet to shift more aircraft to Kingfisher Red to tap the low-cost market. Jet lacked such flexibility with JetLite being a separate entity. Jet Konnect is a service launched in response to a demand for a low-fare service on some existing Jet Airways domestic routes. These are routes where we have seen our seat factor fall by a larger margin than the actual fall in demand, says Raghavan.

Industry experts, however, are divided in their opinion. Jet Konnect will stimulate some demand, but not profits because the services are offered within the cost structure of a full-service carrier, says Kapil Kaul, CEO, South Asia of Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, an aviation consultancy firm. He feels it's better to put more capacity on JetLite in view of its more competitive cost structure. But Mahantesh Sabarad, Senior Analyst with Centrum Broking, sees the experiment as a positive move to bring down cost, except that, as he says, Jet Konnect could have achieved the same under its own brand by introducing more ATR in the fleet.

But with the Jet Konnect management hinting that the new brand will go once the economy recovers, it is not a bad gamble considering that low fare is any day better than no fare.

Naresh Goyal-controlled Jet Airways plans to revive its Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco air service following a recovery in international air traffic.

Jet Airways had earlier withdrawn its long-haul flight due to economic downturn resulting into poor demand on the sector.

We can start our flight to Shanghai any time, an Jet Airways official said on condition of anonymity. Jet Airways would also launch a flight to Johannesburg next month.

The official said the Jet Airways already has government nod to operate daily flights to Shanghai. When we last started flight to Shanghai the load was below 50 percent making the operation commercially unviable, he said.

Jet Airways has seen a significant jump in traffic on its foreign routes and is currently managing a load factor of over 80 percent on several routes including the long-haul flight to Europe and North America.

When contacted a Jet Airways official spokesperson said the airline keeps evaluating various routes for operation. We can not confirm the plan to restart flight to Shanghai at this point of time, she said.

With the world economy rebounding in recent months, demand for air travel has significantly improved encouraging airlines to add capacity on their network. The traffic on the India-US sector has gone up nearly 20 percent compared to last February. Although traffic to Shanghai is very limited, the onward traffic to the West Coast including San Francisco, Las Vegas and Los Angeles is quite good, Amadeus India managing director Ankur Bhatia said.

Jet Airways also plans to introduce Mumbai-Colombo flight. Jet Airways already has a Chennai-Colombo service. Naresh Goyal-promoted Jet Airways has ended year 2009 with a combined market share of 26.5 percent overtaking Kingfisher Airlines to emerge as the largest player in the domestic airline market. Jet Airways is reported a 53 percent increase in domestic passengers during December has increased Jet Airways share from 24.3 percent in the beginning of the year January to March quarter of the year to 26.5 percent in the fourth quarter.

On the other hand Kingfisher Airlines has seen its market share erode considerably over the last one year. The Vijay Mallya-promoted Kingfisher Airlines was the lead player in the market with a share of 27.2 percent in the first quarter of 2009. However the airline ended the year with 20.6 percent share in the fourth quarter.

According to the aviation industry experts the change in market positions of the two airlines is explained by the fact that for the first two quarters Kingfisher had 70-80 percent of its capacity dedicated to its low-cost brand Kingfisher Red.

After introducing Jet Konnect no-frills all economy brand in May Jet Konnect was only towards the third quarter when the airline moved almost two-thirds of its capacity to Jet Konnect and that when it gained market share, said Kapil Kaul, CEO, Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation. Crisis-hit Air India has also marginally increased its share from 17 percent in the first quarter to 18.3 percent at the end of the fourth quarter.

According to the latest figures released by the directorate general of civil aviation, airline traffic registered a growth of around 35 percent in December against the same period last year due to the high demand during the peak season.

Domestic airlines carried a total of 44.87 lakh passengers in December with the Jet Konnect and the JetLite combine leading the pack with a market share of 26.2 percent followed by Kingfisher and Air India.

In November the airline traffic had grown by 30 percent on a year-on-year basis. In fact the fourth quarter has been the best for the industry compared to all three quarters with a total of 125.33 lakh passengers. According to DGCA, 2009 saw a 7.86 percent growth in airline traffic flying a total of 445.13 lakh passengers against 412.71 lakh in 2008.

During December low-cost carrier IndiGo dominated the seat factor aspect, filling up 90 percent of its seats, followed by SpiceJet which had a seat factor of 88 percent and JetLite at 81.6 percent.

However, JetLite topped the flight cancellation list in December with a 3.2 percent cancellation rate, while budget airline GoAir had the lowest cancellation rate at 0.5 percent in the same month, according to DGCA estimates.

Jet Airways slid deeper into the red in the second quarter ended September 30, suffering a net loss of Rs 406.69 crore.

The private airline Jet Airways blamed the poor performance on three factors, the lean monsoon season when people are reluctant to fly, weakening yields amid intense competition in the market, and the five-day strike by pilots last month which had led to a revenue loss of Rs 80 crore.

Total revenues shrank 25 per cent to Rs 2,325.02 crore from Rs 3,121.34 crore in the year-ago period.

Jet Airways had suffered a loss of Rs 225 crore in the first quarter ended June 30. As a result, Jet Airways loss for the half year has swelled to Rs 632.02 crore, a 162 per cent increase over the level of Rs 241.15 crore in the year-ago period.

Jet Airways slashed its overall expenditure by 31.6 per cent to Rs 2,516.65 crore from Rs 3,681.84 crore in the same quarter a year ago. Fuel expenditure was down 53.8 per cent to Rs 780 crore from Rs 1,687.81 crore a year ago.

However Jet Airways moaned about the 17.4 per cent increase in fuel costs over the April-June quarter which Jet Airways said had raised fuel costs by Rs 108.3 crore on a trailing quarter basis. Jet Airways has now converted almost two-thirds of its seating capacity on its 85 planes to a no-frills service following the launch of its Jet Airways Konnect service in May.

Jet Airways was hoping that the switch would boost its fortunes. But it has seen mixed results. Jet Airways said the seat factor on its Jet Konnect service had topped 75 per cent against an overall domestic seat factor of 69.8 per cent in the second quarter.

At present 27 of its 85 planes have been deployed on the Jet Konnect routes which link five metros — Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru and Calcutta — with other towns and cities across the country.

Jet Airways said it carried 2.79 million revenue passengers during the quarter down 1.2 per cent over the year-ago period. Jet Konnect said its seating capacity had risen 2.5 per cent following the conversion to the no-frills Jet Konnect service. Jet Konnect maintained the full benefit of this conversion would show up in the third quarter.

Revenues from the Jet Airways international operations account for 62 per cent of its total revenues at Rs 1467.6 crore against 53 per cent or Rs 1734.1 crore in the second quarter of last year. Jet Airways said it had achieved a seat factor of 80.6 per cent on Jet Airways international routes as against 66 per cent in the year-ago quarter.

A Delhi-bound Jet Konnect aircraft with 72 passengers on board had to return here today soon after take-off as the pilot identified a snag.

The turbo-prop Jet Konnect aircraft made an airturn back and a precautionary landing 15 minutes after take-off airport sources said.

Confirming the incident a spokesperson of Jet Konnect which is a fully-owned subsidiary of Jet Airways said the Jaipur-Jodhpur-Delhi flight 9W3312 turned back due to technical reasons and landed safely.

Alternative arrangements are being made to ferry the passengers of Jet konnect to their destinations and engineers being deployed to rectify the problem said spokesperson of Jet Konnect

Reports suggested that since SpiceJet, JetLite and Jet Konnect largely operate Boeing 737 planes, the proposed operational alliance is looking at synergy of operations and cross-utilization of resources. The move may shave both airlines' engineering and maintenance costs by 35-40 percent.

SpiceJet operates 127 flights daily to 18 cities with 19 Boeing 737 aircrafts while JetLite operates a fleet of 23 planes, of which 16 are Boeing 737s.

The arrangement will allow planes from the Jet Airways to be maintained or serviced at airports where one of the partners has stronger resources, but there is no proposal for code-sharing, cross-selling of tickets and joint fuel management, the reports added.

Jet Airways, which is India's largest private carrier by passenger traffic, had in October 2008 announced an operational alliance with direct rival and second largest private airline Kingfisher Airlines for both flights and ground operations.

Jet Airways recently secured shareholders' approval to raise additional capital up to 400 million dollars, or Rs 2,000 crore. The funds may be reportedly raised by private placement of shares with qualified institutional buyers or by global depository receipts, American depository receipts and foreign currency convertible bonds.

According to reports, Jet Airways airline needs a cash infusion given its expansion plans for the full-service carrier as well as the recently launched low-cost carrier Jet Konnect.

Last month, Jet Airways' pilots, who were legally not allowed to strike without informing the Jet Airways management in advance, resorted to a strike by reporting sick on 8 September 2009, disrupting Jet Airways flights affecting thousands of passengers. The pilots' stir continued till 12 September 2009, disrupting the operations of Jet Airways.

The pilots, including the four who were sacked, resumed duties on 13 September 2009, after an amicable agreement was reached between the management and the striking pilots.

GO AIRLINES India, which runs the low fare carrier GO AIRLINES, denied that it was in talks for selling stake to Paramount Airways, a Chennai based carrier.

Jeh Wadia, managing director of budget carrier GO AIRLINES has said that they have been receiving many offers for investment but the GO AIRLINES board has decided not to proceed with these proposals as of now. He added that GO AIRLINES will focus on its plan of adding 12 Airbus aircraft to its existing fleet of eight planes. The order for 20 planes had been placed in 2007 for around 1.2 billion Dollars.

M Thiagarajan, managing director, Paramount Airways also denied any talks with GO AIRLINES for any possible acquisition.

Presently, GO AIRLINES has a brand new A320 aircraft which currently flies to 12 destinations with 377 weekly flights. On the other hand, Paramount airways flies to 16 destinations across the country and operates 72 flights daily, carrying more than 3600 passengers everyday.

Indian carrier Jet Airways has confirmed it will launch a new departure from Delhi to Hong Kong later this week.

A daily service will operate from September 20th, complementing an existing service between Mumbai and Hong Kong.

The inaugural flight will depart Delhi on Wednesday aboard a wide-body Airbus 330-200 aircraft, returning from Hong Kong on October 1st to mark the Chinese National Day, the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.

The number of people flying business class has seen a decline of over 40 per cent in the domestic routes and 20 per cent internationally, said Ajay Prakash, general secretary, Travel Agents Federation of India.

Data from Cleartrip.com, a portal for ticket and hotel bookings, shows the occupancy rate for business class seats in the domestic sector has come down 50 per cent.

Corporate travel has not picked up after the economic slowdown and even the government has resorted to austerity. Also, airlines have cut capacity and are getting into more and more low-cost models, Prakash said.

An official with Cox and Kings’, the travel group, said business travel this year is down compared with last year, due to the recession.

Overall business class travel, including domestic and international, is down. Corporate travel is down badly due to the downturn and swine flu. But the future looks a bit better, said an official of Thomas Cook, a travel agency with international presence.

There is a general agreement that international business class travel has been hit much more than the domestic one.

India’s largest airline Jet Airways Konnect has been going through a tough phase in the recent past. A five-day strike by a section of Jet Airways Konnect pilots in September is estimated to have left an Rs 100 crore hole in its revenues.

While the Jet Airways Konnect has been able to resolve the dispute and recover quickly, the strike and subsequent cancellations not only caused revenue loss, but also disgruntled customers which could impact it in the short term.

In order to arrest a fall in market share, ensure higher loads and lower cost, Jet Airways Konnect has been expanding the services of its no frills all-economy class offering, Jet Konnect.

From a third, Jet Airways Konnect is expected to deploy two-thirds of domestic fleet on Jet Konnect from October this year. Ever since the launch of Jet Konnect in May 2009, domestic load factors have improved to 70 per cent from 64.9 per cent in April.

Overall, in the domestic operations, from losses at the operating profit level in June quarter of last year, cost cutting, reduction in aviation fuel costs and higher loads have helped boost operating profit margins to about 9 per cent in June 2009 quarter. On a consolidated basis, these stood at 16.5 per cent for June 2009 quarter against losses in the same quarter last year.

Jet Airways Konnect is planning to raise 400 million dollars, about Rs 2,000 crore from an equity issue of which half will be used to retire a part of the Rs 15,000 crore debt, Rs 3,500 crore short-term debt, while the rest will be used for working capital requirements.

A reversal of industry fortunes should help Jet Konnects improve its financial and operational parameters. The stock is trading at 18 times its 2010-11 estimated earnings and should fetch about 20 per cent over a one year period from these levels, if the macro factors do not turn adverse.

Rat delays Air India flight by 11 hours

It's that creature again that held up a London-bound Air India flight by nearly 11 hours from the Rajasansi airport here Saturday.

Air India Flight AI-187, which was scheduled to depart at 6.30 a.m. Saturday, finally left for London around 5.26 p.m. after Air India provided a new aircraft.There were 238 passengers on the flight.

The flight finally left at 5.26 p.m. today. Air India provided a new aircraft to take the passengers to London, Air India manager Ashwini Kumar Arora told.

However, passengers were angry at the delay and said the airline ground staff did little to lessen their hardship.

Our flight was for nearly 10 hours. We have wasted the entire day here and now we will land in London very early in the morning. What is the upkeep of the Air India staff, one passenger said.

The aircraft, in which the rat was detected early Saturday morning by passengers, was searched throughout the day. Air India officials said the aircraft would be allowed to fly only after the rodent is found and all security checks are performed on the plane.

A rat entered the aircraft and the Air India staff was searching for it. Air India flight was delayed by several hours, airport director Chinson Panakal told.

Airport officials said some passengers noticed the rodent in the plane and informed the staff. The passengers were taken off the plane and then waited for hours at the airport for Air India to make alternate arrangements.

Some passengers said they were being needlessly harassed due to negligence of the Air India staff and inadequate arrangements.

It was not only the question of finding the rat. The aircraft in which the rat was seen will have to undergo all security checks under the DGCA Directorate General of Civil Aviation guidelines. That will take a long time, Arora added.

Jet Airways shareholders on Thursday approved the fund starved airline’s plan to raise up to 400 million Dollars, or about Rs 1,920 crore, at an extra-ordinary general meeting as it desperately looks to raise money to avoid loan defaults. Burdened with a debt burden of Rs 16,000 crore, the Naresh Goyal-controlled full-service airline had last month said it would raise 400 million Dollars by diluting equity through private placement of shares with qualified institutional buyers or sale of global depository receipts, American depository receipts or foreign currency convertible bonds.

Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines, the other private full-service carrier in the country, badly require an equity infusion to remain afloat, said an aviation analyst requesting anonymity.

Jet Airways is yet to decide on the fund-raising instrument. As reported, the company has sought the government’s permission to sell shares to overseas investors as it may be hard to raise 400 million Dollars from domestic investors alone.

Any share sale will result in dilution of shareholding of the promoters who hold 80 percent in the company. The Jet Airways stock slipped 0.35 percent to close at Rs 311 on BSE.

The domestic aviation industry has been badly hit by surging crude oil prices last calendar year, which touched a high of 147 Dollars per barrel in September last year. With economic slowdown making people go for cheaper options, full-service airlines have been forced to keep their fares very low to check travellers from moving to low-cost carriers. The country’s second largest private carrier Jet Airways, which is planning to replace its off-peak hour flights on metro routes by its low-fare service to contain losses, will add six more B-737 aircraft to its no-frill Jet Konnect network.

In the next 2-3 months we will replace off-peak hour full-fare flights by Jet Konnect, Jet Airways official asking not to be named said. He said this is largely because there is very little demand for business class even on busier metro routes.

Jet Konnect currently operates 130 flights across the country with a fleet size of 11 B737s. These six more aircraft being diverted from its full fare service to Jet Konnect will take the fleet size to 17. Jet Airways has seen a 20-25 percent increased load on flights operated by Jet Konnect, even though its yield has fallen by about 10 percent. Jet Airways is planning to introduce all-economy Jet Konnect flight even on the country’s busiest Delhi-Mumbai route.

Despite the drop in yield, revenues are on the positive side, another company official, who also did not wish to be identified, said.

The airfare gap between a full-service and a budget airline has widened again to 30-35 percent level, following a sharp fall in jetfuel price. This has led to air-travellers moving away from full-fare to low-cost carriers. Incidentally the two major budget carriers IndiGo and SpiceJet have significantly improved their market share in the past one year.

The combined market share of the two airlines increased to 26.2 percent in August this year from 18.8 percent in the corresponding month last year. All the full-service carriers are now focusing on no-frill air service. While Kingfisher Airlines has shifted about 65 percent of its capacity to Kingfisher Red, Air India is gearing up to launch its budget airline Air India Express in the domestic market.

Corporate travellers have moved to economy class since the downturn in the economy, the Jet official said. He highlighted that companies had also cut down their travel budgets. Now, even the government had embarked on a major austerity drive and has asked officials to travel only economy class. The market is clearly moving towards low-cost air travel, he said

Saroj Dutta, executive director, Jet Airways told ET, We are losing revenue earnings of around $5 million. He denied any delay on the payment of salaries for this month. The strike was on account of two pilots’ services being terminated. The Naresh Goyal controlled Jet Airways’ annual salary bill is around Rs 2,000 crore for over 12,000 employees.

Meanwhile, the passenger load factor of both full service carriers like Kingfisher Airlines , Air India, Paramount and low cost carriers like IndiGo, Spice-Jet , GoAir were up with some of them registering levels in excess in 95 percent on some peak hour flights.

The situation is likely to get worse on Saturday, with Jet Airways cancelled its ATR flights which were being operated for short hauls, using expat pilots.

In a late night development, Jet Aiways head of operations in Mumbai sent out a communique to all offices to cancel ATRs.

Jet Airways has 14 servicable ATR aircraft making 50 flights everyday.

Every time an angry passenger goes on a TV channel to narrate his ordeal due to the pilots’ strike, Jet Airways chief Naresh Goyal immediately calls up senior Jet Airways officials from his war room a suite in a Delhi five-star hotel and demands an explanation.

Clearly, he is battling to save the image of his 16-year-old airline that has set high standards in passenger service. But some costly misadventures in the past few years, along with the current downturn — and now this pilot revolt — mean that the 59-year-old Goyal has a big battle ahead.

Jet Airways was founded in 1993 and over the next few years established itself as a leading Indian player, becoming a case study for inflight excellence. Possibly excited by this euphoria, industry insiders say, the management made its first big gamble by eying Air Sahara in 2006. Apart from Jet Airways and Air India, Sahara was among the only three Indian carriers that flew abroad during that period. Goyal moved in to buy Sahara a year later for a whopping Rs 1,450 crore. Jet fulfilled its desire to be the only private Indian carrier to fly abroad in 2006 but it also flew into a financial air pocket.

Acquiring Sahara meant a huge drain on Jet Airway’s resources, both on financial and management fronts. All this happened at a time when the concept of low-cost carriers was completing two years in India. The domestic aviation market was growing at 30-40 percent and players like Air Deccan were challenging the might of full service carriers. Not surprisingly, Jet Airways has been constantly incurring losses since 2007-08.

Buying Sahara was a big strategic mistake by Jet Airways. This happened at a time when Jet Airways was growing aggressively internationally and facing tremendous competition in local market, Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation India head Kapil Kaul says. With domestic market getting new players, Jet Airways focussed on international expansion and lost nearly 10 percent market share in two years. For instance, the international departures rose from 1,731 in October-December 2006 period to 3,198 for same quarter next year.

The first sign of real trouble in Jet Airways became apparent exactly a year ago when Goyal did the unthinkable by entering into an operational tie up with arch rival Vijay Mallaya’s Kingfisher Airlines. This step was followed by Jet Airways sacking 1,900 cabin crew. Following the political uproar, Jet Airways had to reverse the order. But in the past one year it has gradually retrenched close to 2000 employees.

Possibly, Jet Airways could have weathered this crisis had the global economy not gone into a tail spin. The full service model virtually became redundant in the domestic market and Jet Airways responded by launching Jet Konnect this April and shifting most of its domestic operations to LCC section. Over 20 percent domestic capacity has been cut and today the airline has 280 daily flights within India and 100 overseas.

Saddled with losses and a debt burden of nearly $3 billion, Goyal embarked on an ambitious saving programme of nearly $600 million that saw staff being retrenched, loss-making flights withdrawn and salaries of senior officials slashed by up to 25 percent.

This cost-cutting meant giving up things that Goyal fought for dearly. For instance, he tried hard and finally got clearance to operate a Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco flight. But with this flight’s loss meter clocking up $57 million, this flight was stopped. Similarly, several loss-making domestic flights facing overcapacity were diverted to nearby international routes.

But the high-profile labour unrest in the form of pilots reporting sick en masse could not have come at a worse time for the airline. Cost-cutting could entail pay cuts and possible retrenchments in the 13,000 employee-strong airline. Having a belligerent union at this time means trouble. Moreover, the airline is also looking at raising $400 million from the market. Investors also don’t like to put in money with troubled labour relations. Most airlines across the world have not had a good fate ever since unions became strong. Air India and Alitalia are classic examples, says an industry insider.

Goyal’s fight to take the airline to its old position of strength will no doubt be an uphill task. Jet Airways shares were first listed in 2005 for Rs 1,100. The scrip has never touched that level and closed at Rs 262.55 on Wednesday. Its high and low price in past year has been Rs 551 and Rs 115. Interestingly, during the pilot stir, Jet Airways shares have risen marginally, lending credence to the current aviation wisdom — airlines lose more by flying than by having planes parked at airports.

On his part, Goyal admits that the industry and Jet airline are facing the toughest challenge ever. But along with my employees, I will weather the storm and Jet Airways will remain the one company that had made India proud. For me, Jet Airways is a symbol of Indian excellence and it will remain that. If anyone tries to change the core belief of the airline on excellence, I will not hesitate to close it down, he said.

Jet Airways Konnect and Jetlite introduce special five day apex fares on key domestic routes

Jet Airways, India’s premier international airline, its new all-economy service Jet Airways Konnect and Jet Airways all-economy subsidiary, JetLite have introduced special five day base apex fares between INR 150-900 on several key routes across India.

These special fares are applicable only on flights departing between 1230 hrs to 1630 hrs and 2030 hrs to 0700 hrs on sectors indicated below, and are available for sale with immediate effect from 13th July 2009 to 27th July 2009.

Jet Airways, Jet Konnect Airways and JetLite offer a special base fare of INR 150 on routes including the Srinagar-Jammu, Guwahati-Imphal, Bhubaneshwar-Kolkata, Delhi-Lucknow, Indore-Mumbai, Kochi-Hyderabad, Kolkata-Dibrugarh and Mumbai-Raipur sectors, among others.

On routes including the Mumbai-Chennai, Delhi-Mumbai-Pune, Kolkata-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Delhi and Delhi-Kolkata sectors, the airlines offer a special base of INR 400.

On the Guwahati-Delhi, Mumbai-Kolkata, Bengaluru-Chennai-Delhi and Delhi-Kochi sector the airline will offer a special base fare of INR 900.

Low-cost airlines see big biz in food sales on board

The move to sell food and drinks could prove to be a money-spinner for the low cost airlines but the catering firms are looking glum as full service airlines turn into low or semi-low cost carriers.

For a growing number of domestic air travellers, no journey is complete unless they have had something to eat or drink on board. The days when you could get not-always-pleasing whiffs of home cooked food 35,000 feet above the ground may not be over, but the trend is increasingly towards purchasing a drink or a sandwich.

Of course, both come at a price. A vegetable sandwich on SpiceJet costs Rs 80 and a non-vegetarian sandwich costs Rs 100 if you have forgotten to book in advance. If you have been diligent, the cost comes down by about half.
Saving on catering bill

The rates are lower as the airline saves on its catering bill. Most low-cost airlines just carry a small quantity more than the food and drinks that have been booked. This helps save on catering costs and this is passed back to the passenger, a senior airline official said.

SpiceJet is coy about the number of passengers seeking a snack or a beverage but say the number is substantial.

Jet Airways Konnect, the new low-cost sub-brand of Jet Airways, has seen almost half its customers requesting for something to eat or drink – even though they have to pay for it. It is difficult to give a breakdown of the number of passengers seeking only a beverage or a meal, an official said.

Full service airlines such as Jet Airways, Air India Domestic and Kingfisher include the cost of providing a meal to the passenger in the fare.

In the case of Jet Airways, the move will also affect the catering business. Sources estimate that the catering industry in Delhi and Mumbai alone stand to see a drop in revenue of about Rs 4 crore a month due to Jet Airways operating more flights with Konnect.
